ABAUJ-TORNA Province

Origin/Meaning:
The county was the union of the formerly two counties Abauj and Torna in 1881.
The two counties were united at first 1782-1790, and again from 1849-1860. Both
of the two counties were old counties from the early Middle Ages. Abauj-Torna
county was divided by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. The smaller part (46,6%)
became part of the new Czechoslovakia, the bigger part (53,4%) remained in
Hungary. In 1938 the Decision of Vienna reunited the northern part with Hungary
too. The Treaty of Paris in 1947 renewed the borders of the Treaty of Trianon.
On 1st January 1950 Abauj-Torna county was united with Borsod-G”m”r and Zempl‚n
counties as Borsod-Abauj-Zempl‚n county. The northern parts of the formerly
Abauj-Torna county (1882-1920) are in the Kosice Region of Slovakia now.
The arms of Abauj-Torna county were granted by King Francis-Joseph in 1882. The
arms combine the arms of the two former counties.
The arms of Abauj county are shown below. These arms were granted in 1558 and
are derived from the arms of the Aba clan.
The arms of Torna county showed a silver falcon on a green shield and were first
mentioned in 1619.
